Guttenhouse
Fiercely dedicated to improving opportunities for the homeless and for young people, Guttenberg has helped to create Guttenhouse. On Wednesday, June 13th, an innovative and committed team of individuals celebrated the grand opening of South Los Angeles apartments, which will provide temporary shelter for at-risk 18- to 21-year-old emancipated foster youth transitioning into independence. This program will help the approximately 1,000 youth who annually age out of the County foster care system and face the difficult challenge of attaining self-sufficient lives.
The challenge is truly great. Without a support program, nearly 50 percent of the young adults would likely end up homeless, according to a study completed by the UCLA School of Social Welfares Center for Child and Family Policy Studies.
These apartments will serve as a vital transitional home for youth that were denied a traditional parental home. But a caring partnership is here to help them become self-sufficient adults.?
In addition to subsidized shelter, program assistance includes training in life skills, help in finding employment, child care allowances, and educational support. The emancipated youth can receive the housing assistance for up to a year-and-a-half (18 months), and the individuals hold jobs while in the program. While enrolled, participants contribute a portion of their income toward rent; however, upon completion of the program, their contribution to the rent is returned to them so that the funds can be used to help them pay for their own independent rental housing.
We are determined to keep increasing the number of beds for the unmet need.
